Spring Benefit Concert: The Music Makers - April 28, 2018

from 15.00

The Chorale continues its multi-year exploration of some of the lesser-known gems of the English choral tradition with a performance of Edward Elgar's The Music Makers. Composed over a span of years during the first decade of the twentieth century, the lush, post-romantic score is a perfect complement to the moving text of Arthur O'Shaughnessy. With numerous self-quotations that appear throughout the score, the piece is a deeply personal one in which Elgar reflects on the place of the artist in society. We will present Elgar’s rarely-heard masterpiece in a new arrangement for chamber ensemble by Andrew Jonathan Welch. The distinguished Canadian mezzo-soprano, Vivien Shotwell, joins us to perform both the solo part in The Music Makers and portions of Elgar’s Sea Pictures. Additional works of Percy Grainger and John Ireland are also featured on the program. Proceeds from the concert will support Southeast Ministry, our 2017-18 beneficiary.  Concert starts at 4 PM.
